Who cares about frogs?
While every organism in our ecosystem is important, scientists are paying particular attention to frogs. As it turns out, these little green guys are becoming a very important environmental indicator. (Since ecosystems are so complex, scientists use indicators as measurements of what is happening in our environment. For example, CO2 levels tracked over time can tell you the status of ozone depletion) So why are scientists using frogs? What are frogs telling us about our environment?
This project specifically supports the Wisconsin State Standards for Science. (especially F.12.8 Using the science themes, infer changes in ecosystems prompted by the introduction of new species, environmental conditions, chemicals, and air, water, or earth pollution, and H.12.6 Evaluate data and sources of information when using scientific information to make decisions)
